Urgent Appointment

To request an urgent appointment for today (Monday to Friday):

  • phone us on 029 2073 9999, Monday to Friday from 8am

When you get in touch, we will ask about your needs to ensure you are seen by the most approriate doctor, nurse or health professional.

Depending on our appointment capacity, you may be offered an appointment at our branch site, St David's Medical Centre in Pentwyn.

Routine Appointment

To request a routine appointment in the next 14 days:

When you get in touch, we’ll ask what you need help with.

We will use the information you give us to choose the most suitable doctor, nurse or health professional to help you.

Nurse triage

When you call to book an appointment with your GP, you might be offered an appointment with one of our two prescribing practice nurses if they are better suited to address your needs. Our practice nurses are qualified to manage a range of conditions, including but not limited to:

  • Chest infections
  • Tonsillitis
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Skin infections

Please be assured that our reception team follows specific guidance and training provided by our doctors to direct you to the most appropriate healthcare professional for your condition. This approach helps ensure you receive the right care as quickly as possible.

However you choose to contact us, we may offer you a consultation:

  • by phone
  • face to face at the surgery

Appointments by phone, can be more flexible and often means you get help sooner.

Cancelling or changing an appointment

To cancel your appointment:

  • use your NHS Wales App
  • phone us on 029 2073 9999, Monday to Friday from 8am
  • reply CANCEL to your appointment reminder text message

If you need help when we are closed

In an emergency dial 999

If you require urgent medical attention between the hours of 6:30pm and 8am Monday to Friday, or on weekends and Bank Holidays, ring the surgery on 02920 739999. You will be given the phone number for the out of hours service who will provide you with appropriate advice.

NHS 111 Wales is available to offer general health advice 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Their phone number is 111. 

The out of hours service is commissioned by Cardiff Local Health Board.

Medical Advice

Advice on non-urgent matters can be obtained from NHS 111 Wales by ringing 111.

If you need help with your appointment

Please tell us:

  • if there’s a specific doctor, nurse or other health professional you would prefer to respond
  • if you would prefer to consult with the doctor or nurse by phone, face-to-face, by video call or by text or email
  • if you need a chaperone
  • if you need an interpreter
  • if you have any other access or communication needs

Home visits

If possible please try to telephone reception before 10:30am if you require a home visit.

You may only request a home visit if you are housebound or are too ill to visit the practice. Your GP will only visit you at home if they think that your medical condition requires it and will also decide how urgently a visit is needed.

You can be visited at home by a community nurse if you are referred by your GP. You should also be visited at home by a health visitor if you have recently had a baby or if you are newly registered with a GP and have a child under five years.

As part of our ongoing work with the North Cardiff Cluster your home visit may be undertaken by a Paramedic. Your GP will arrange for the Paramedic to visit you.

Urgent Primary Care Centre (UPCC)

You may be offered an appointment at the UPCC, located at Whitchurch Road Surgery. This service aims to alleviate pressure on local GP surgeries by providing same-day urgent appointments for specific conditions, such as coughs, chest infections, tonsillitis, UTIs, and acute back pain.  Whitchurch Road Surgery is approximately a 12-minute drive from Pontprennau Medical Centre.
